Running in harmony with nature

You go up and down the trails, listening only to your breath, while the physical effort tenses your body and your mind remains focused on that precise moment. All you can think about is enjoying each second t the fullest, freeing your mind as you proceed at your own pace.

Trail running is an up-and-coming phenomenon that is enthusing more and more people. People, not necessarily athletes. To each their own distance

Are you thinking of taking up this discipline? Or have you already tried your hand at it? Perhaps you have already decided to sign up for that race that is a bit of a secret dream of yours, and are asking yourself some fundamental questions: 'What should I wear' 'Which backpack should I carry?' 'Is it all running?'

First of all, it is useful to know that routes are classified based on distance and altitude difference. Trail running applies to routes shorter than 42 km, with a 3,000 metre difference in altitude. As these parameters increase, the route becomes an Ultra Trail or Endurance Trail. Numerous races of this type are also organised in Trentino.

From zero to hero

Trail running is an endurance sport and, for this reason, it is good to be suitably and gradually trained, to avoid injuries or excessive efforts that would compromise your future activity.

Don't expect to tackle long distances and large altitude differences right away: start by planning your practice and familiarize with different kinds of terrain and environments. Another useful tip is to practise other sports in your training sessions: biking, trekking and hiking. Here in Trentino, you have a privileged vantage point, with a vast track network, from Lake Garda to the Dolomites!

Equipment and gear

It may sound strange to you, but there is more to this sport than just running! Especially in the uphill phases, running is alternated with walking, especially in the steeper sections, and poles can be an invaluable aid.

It is essential to have the right equipment: specific shoes (remember, they have to be comfortable, or you'll feel the pain!), technical clothing, a sling or trail backpack to store water supplies, energy bars and layered clothing. If the distance to be travelled is long, always carry a lightweight warm jacket and an anorak, in case of rain and wind.

Last, but not least, remember your first aid equipment: for instance, a thermal blanket can be indispensable in emergency situations. A spirit of adaptation and self-sufficiency are basic requirements for practising this discipline.

One thing is for sure: trail running is not just a sport, it is a way of life that will lead you to experience that secret pleasure inherent in exerting yourself in harmony and in total connection with nature and the environment.
