Besenello
The arduous Emperor's Trail and the majestic Beseno Castle at Besenello
Besenello is a small town set in the green landscape of Vallagarina, on the left bank of the Adige river. Known mostly for Beseno Castle, that dominates it and is splendidly lit up at night, the town enjoys an especially mild climate thanks to its geographical position in a sunny amphitheatre of fields dedicated to vines and fruit orchards. The place bears signs of being fortified since pre-historic times, and Beseno Castle is Trentino's largest fortification. It occupies the entire top of the hill that stands beside the river at its intersection with the valley that leads to Folgaria. Today, after careful restoration works, Beseno Castle is also an extraordinary stage for shows and historical pageants.
Besenello offers visitors countless occasions for excursions on mountain bikes or on foot. One of the trails is the Sentiero dell'imperatore (Emperor's Trail), a track created for military purposes that starts from the colonial house standing opposite Villa Bortolazzi, in Acquaviva, and climbs up all the way to the goal of this itinerary: the small church of Santa Trinità. On the left side of the church is the spectacular chasm that drops down onto Rio Secco stream. From Besenello it is possible to join the cycling path of the Adige valley bottom.
