Ton
Ton and Castel Thun welcome visitors to Val di Non
Ton is a small town in the Lower Val di Non valley featuring castles, churches and villas, which take visitors on a journey through local history and by-gone traditions. Ton and its outlying municipal districts of Toss, Vigo, Masi di Vigo and Castelletto, are overlooked by an imposing castle, which has become the symbol of the valley.
Castel Thun majestically dominates the access to the Val di Non valley. Built in 1100 and later turned into a powerful residence in accordance with the customs of the 16-17th centuries, it is one of the most imposing and refined mansions of the Trentino region. The castle has been recently refurbished by the Autonomous Province of Trento, and its gardens - together with the loggia of the cannons - are now open to visitors. A number of vintage carriages are also exhibited.
Castel San Pietro lies nearby. Its ruins still retain much of their age-old charm.
Other interesting local highlights include the parish church of the Assumption (1500) with its 18th century alter-piece painted by Francesco Guardi; the small church of San Vigilio (1300); and the number of age-old small-sized churches, which are scattered throughout the peaceful villages surrounded by the fruit orchards at the foot of the castle and at the bottom of the valley towards Rocchetta Mountain.
