Attention! Here comes the "Befana", the good witch
In the heart of Penìa, after sunset, the "Befana", the old and nice witch, arrives with many presents for all children
As is tradition, Epiphany is celebrated in Val di Fassa with the passage of the Three Kings and the "Befana" (old and nice woman) concluding the magic period of Christmas. At 6 p.m. in the square in Penìa di Canazei the "Befana", the old woman with a hooked nose and a keen chin, wearing rags and covered with soot, flying on a worn-out broom. The children who behaved themselves will receive many small presents, while the naughtier ones will have to settle for some charcoal, but sweet in turn.
Penìa is the last town in Fassa that one encounters on the way up from Moena. In this village, almost perched on the slopes of the Marmolada, extraordinary historical buildings are preserved, including "Cèsa Dovolavilla", the typical Fassa residence ("majon") equipped with a bread oven, the small church of Saints Rocco and Sebastian in the square with its fountain and other rural buildings with characteristic wooden balconies. In addition, Penìa and Alba are the custodians of the oldest rites and customs, handed down from generation to generation, such as the arrival of St Nicholas, the "Pèsca Tofenia" (Epiphany) and the Ladin Carnival.
