Exploring Trento along the Bicipolitana

On two wheels, on a beautiful spring day

Do you know what a Bicipolitana is? It is like an underground metro, but instead of trains, it is designed for bikes! With intersecting routes marked by coloured arrows, it helps you reach your destination effortlessly.

Trento has its very own Bicipolitana, and this spring, we are hitting the trails together to uncover the city’s hidden gems. All you need is a bike and a Bicipolitana map, which you can grab at the Trento APT office in Piazza Dante. They will also provide all the details on where to rent a bike.

Breakfast at the Parco delle Albere

To reach your first destination, take Line 6 (purple) from Piazza Dante, which will lead you to Parco delle Albere, an expansive park sitting along the banks of the River Adige in a district designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano.

Here, you can stop at the Urban Factory Lab for a “New York-style” breakfast or opt for a classic croissant and cappuccino at the Bottega del Caffè Dersut.

This neighbourhood is also home to the MUSE, the iconic natural science museum, another masterpiece by Renzo Piano. Opened in 2013, it quickly became a must-see attraction for visitors to Trentino.

Along the Lungadige to discover a neighbourhood that feels like a small village

Time to hop back on your bike! From Parco delle Albere, near the River Adige, you will find Line 1 (green) of the Bicipolitana. Follow it towards the city centre along the riverbank until you reach the cable car station and the San Lorenzo Bridge. Cross the bridge to arrive at Piedicastello Square, with its charming, colourful houses.

Refill your water bottle at the square’s fountain and take a moment to visit the Church of Sant’Apollinare, known for its pointed roof. Opposite the church, you will find one of Trento’s most intriguing landmarks: the Gallerie, two former road tunnels transformed into modern exhibition spaces.

Throughout spring, they’re hosting the exhibition “Anelli di congiunzione – Performance”, which explores how cutting-edge technologies are being used to enhance athletic performance.

Now for a trip to the hills or straight into Trento’s heart

After visiting the museum, you have two options. Head back to the cable car station to ride up to the village of Sardagna for breathtaking views of Trento from above, or continue along the Bicipolitana to reach the heart of the city.

If you choose the latter, follow Line 6 (purple) and switch to Line 15 (orange) at Via Verdi, which takes you straight to Piazza Duomo. Here, we recommend a visit to the Cathedral and the Tridentine Diocesan Museum, a treasure trove of artifacts that tell the story of the city.

At this point, take a break for an aperitivo at one of the bars overlooking the square, and soak in the beauty of the historic centre with its frescoed buildings, enjoying the gentle breeze of the season.

When it’s time for lunch, you will be spoiled for choice. Trento’s centre offers everything from gourmet restaurants and traditional trattorias to classic breweries and pizzerias. Buon appetito!

To the Buonconsiglio Castle

Your afternoon leads you to the imposing walls of the Buonconsiglio Castle, once the residence of the prince-bishops who ruled the city.

This castle is well worth a thorough visit—not only for the stunning beauty of its halls but also for the museums and collections it houses. Don’t miss the guided tour of Torre dell’Aquila, home to breathtaking frescoes that are masterpieces of the International Gothic style.

Before you leave, treat yourself to a glass of Trentodoc in a truly special setting: the castle’s café, located in its enchanting gardens, which are even more magical with the vibrant blooms of spring.

What about tomorrow?

If you are still in the mood for cycling, why not take on a slightly more challenging ride? Don’t worry, it is still manageable—about an hour and a half on flat terrain. The destination? The charming city of Rovereto, home to a variety of fascinating museums like the Mart, the Italian War History Museum, Casa Depero, and the Museum of Science and Archaeology.
