Paganella & Piana Rotaliana

Near futures

In order to be protagonists of real change, we need to involve the entire community in an integrated and participative journey that fills the still-to-be-written pages of the future with the stories of innovative projects and the enthusiasm of adventures to experience together.

Dolomiti Paganella Future Lab

'DNA of the territory', 'New Generations', 'Climate Change', and 'Tourism in Balance' are the conceptual pillars of the pioneering Dolomiti Paganella Future Lab project, a path officially launched in 2019 with the aim of involving all stakeholders to design the future of the Altopiano della Paganella.

Future Lab aims to develop proposals that preserve the natural and cultural heritage, creatively and proactively reducing environmental impact. It is an example of how collaboration between residents, administrators and visitors can generate effective solutions for a responsible sustainable culture and economy, balancing tradition and innovation.

The root of all this is the region’s DNA, the very identity of the mountains, valleys and villages, which in turn is the basis for tackling today's social and environmental challenges. Involving young people in the co-creation of a future that reflects their aspirations and values is a way of finding solutions and best practices to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis, proposing a tourism model that merges the needs of visitors with those of the local community, ensuring a positive, lasting impact. From the Youth Commission for Tourism to code of conduct manuals, from research into new forms of storytelling to projects for tourist flow management, future labs explore every aspect of present life.

Charter of Values

What is most valuable does not usually have a price. And the Dolomiti Paganella Charter of Values revolves around this essential concept: ten points drawn up by the Comunità dell’Altopiano della Paganella in 2019 as a guideline for projects and actions throughout the entire area. Inspired by the historical Trentino Carte di Regola rural charters, this Charter addresses today’s challenges, focusing once more on value not price to create a mountain- and human-friendly region.

Some of the fundamental principles are to prioritise quality rather than quantity, to value future generations as pioneers and innovators, to become a resilient and climate-neutral destination, to be a destination for all seasons, characterised by responsible regenerative tourism that generates value in the exchange between guests, territory and locals.

The Charter has been developed and shared with the entire community through an ongoing participatory process and intends to be a programmed guide for every decision and action concerning the Altopiano della Paganella, especially where tourism is concerned.

A resonating narrative

We are the stories we tell and the way we describe the world is itself a reality builder. Discussed and theorised by philosophers and thinkers down through the ages, it has been proven by deeds in history. Not by chance have the Dolomiti Paganella decided to root their environmental and social responsibility project in a profound change of narrative. "Resonating” is the heart.

A resonating pact for sharing by all and for all, guests and guardians of our mountains. Resonating universal values that echo among the old stone farmhouse walls, the deep gorges of the highest peaks, in the deep, honest tone of a rugged land that knows how to welcome. Resonating responsibility, the most flavourful fruit of freedom. Resonating stories, emotions, attention to essence.

Changing the narrative means radically transforming an area together with the tourism options on offer. When this offering is no longer a product but a way of living and being, it changes. To be welcomed means to welcome and a willingness to get involved, change perspective and become authors of the present together with our host community. There are no seasons; there is harmony and awareness, in autumn, winter, spring and summer.

To be a place and not a logo, to be collaboration and not competition: it all starts and derives from trail signs, hotel and restaurant marketing, websites and opportunities for sport, tales told by the elderly and skiing lesson methods, films, documentaries and personal blogs.

Lake Molveno

On 20 March 2023, in response to a need felt by the entire community, the Municipality of Molveno, the ApT Dolomiti Paganella, Trentino Marketing and the Brenta Area Agencies launched the pilot project New Management of Tourist Flows on Lake Molveno, to guarantee that this valuable destination in the Dolomites would prioritise quality rather than quantity, respecting nature, residents’ lives and the visitor experience.

The aim is to calculate the resort’s capacity, in other words the maximum number of people it can accommodate at any one time without being irreparably damaged, and to manage access policies accordingly. The project includes the introduction of infrastructure and communication solutions to control access to the lake. All initiatives are developed with the active involvement of the local community, operators and guests.

Green Team and Cantieri Sostenibilità

Action starts with understanding and is followed by... action! The nine active sustainability sites cover the region’s most urgent needs: tourism, environmental protection, youth and visitor engagement, culture, and mobility. If all the threads in this tapestry are woven well together, each one contributes to enhancing and giving meaning to the complex design of the future we want.

Thus the Paganella youth working group, already united in the New Generation Tourism Commission, and the ApT Dolomiti Paganella have come together as allies in the Green Team, an operational team that has identified the priority actions needed for a full eco-friendly conversion of the region. Cutting emissions and the energy transition are essential, as is recognising the central role played by biodiversity in our existence in this world.

The Wine Garden - Piana Rotaliana Königsberg a Colori

What colour is wine? White, red or rosé, amber, almost black, scarlet, pearly... all the nuances in the world would not be enough to honour the wide variety of wines produced by the maestros of Piana Rotaliana. But a colour can definitely hint at the stories of every plant, every bottle, and, above all, every artist and craftsman whose expert hands create this region’s precious liquid gold.

The precise aim of the Piana Rotaliana Königsberg a Colori project (Piana Rotaliana Königsberg in Colour) is to transform the Piana vineyards into Europe's most fascinating Wine Garden and a virtuous example of sustainability and innovation applied to wine and food tourism. Vinegrowers, administrators, associations, students and tour operators in synergic collaboration with the Piana Rotaliana Königsberg Tourist Consortium, the ApT Dolomiti Paganella and the Edmund Mach Foundation work to combine ethics and aesthetics. In addition to enriching the visual experience, floral initiatives that enhance the beauty and identity of villages and vineyards go hand in hand with the application of sustainable farming practices to protect biodiversity and soil fertility.

An example of this is the practice of green manure: alternating rows of vines with other plants increases the productivity and resilience of the vineyard, improves soil fertility, protects the biological diversity of flora and fauna and with it the eco-systemic richness of the entire area.
