SANBÀPOLIS
In 2004 the city of Trento received the “Alpine Town of the Year” award for its strong historical and environmental ties to the Alps and mountaineering. For this reason, among others, a proper indoor climbing gym was put in the pipeline and, not long afterwards, Sanbàpolis was born. This indoor climbing centre is located, quite strategically, in the suburb of Mattarello to the south of the city, a stone’s throw from the main student residences and, as a consequence, a favourite with university students. The facility is spacious with over 2,300 square metres of climbing surfaces, about half of which are dedicated to amateurs and beginners. The remaining routes on the other hand are reserved for more experienced climbers and you’ll also find a speed wall for competitive free climbing.
Although the facility is generally orientated towards free climbing with the use of ropes, bouldering has not been overlooked, an activity which allows climbers to hone their skills on relatively low structures without ropes and yet in complete safety thanks to the thick layer of crash pads and mats below. There is also an area of the gym specifically dedicated to beginners with permanent fixed ropes, guaranteeing maximum safety. The general impression this facility gives is thatof a large airy ensemble of colourful panels, vertical walls, challenging overhangs and structures of all shapes and sizes which even the most expert climbers have to attempt various times – in the true spirit of bouldering – searching for routes that may seem impossible when considering the laws of gravity! Thanks to this extreme versatility and variety, the Sanbàpolis facility has become a favourite not only with university students but with climbing enthusiasts in general, including families with children.
