In remembrance of the 81st anniversary of the Portela bombing in Trent

Monday 2 September marks the 81st anniversary of the first bombing that hit the city of Trento during the Second World War. To remember the sacrifice of those who lost their lives in this tragic event, the National Association of Civilian War Victims of the Trento section invites a celebration to be held at the monumental cemetery of Trento. Next, in collaboration with the Fondazione Museo storico del Trentino, it proposes a meeting for reflection to be held at the Officina dell 'autonomia, in via Tommaso Gar 29, starting at 6.00 pm.

On September 2, 1943, around noon, the Anglo-American Allied forces began the first bombardment of Trento, causing an impressive number of casualties. About 200 people lost their lives under the rubble caused by the raid that particularly affected the Portela area, namely Piazza Leonardo da Vinci, Via Prepositura, Via San Giovanni, Piazza S. Maria Maggiore, Via Roma and Via Torre Vanga.

Eighty-one years after these dramatic events, on Monday, September 2, 2024, the National Association of Civilian Victims of War - Trento Section and the Fondazione Museo storico del Trentino propose two moments of remembrance and reflection: the first at 5:00 pm at the Ossuary Monument in the cemetery of Trento, the second at 6:00 pm in the room of the Officina dell 'autonomia in via T. Gar 29. During the meeting at 6.00 pm, Fabio Mattevi, president of the National Association of Civilian Victims of War-Trento Section, will speak with a report entitled "Stories: 2 September 1943, orphans and displaced persons"; Giuseppe Ferrandi, director of the Fondazione Museo storico del Trentino, and Michele Toss, researcher at the Museo storico, will present the project to enhance the archive of the National Association of Civilian Victims of War-Trento Section: a heritage, still unexplored, of memories and documents that concern the experience of civilians affected by the tragedies of war and that allows us to look at the Second World War and its consequences on the civilian population.
