What’s a typical day like in an alpine dairy? Wake before dawn to milk the cows and clean out, and then lead them out to pasture. A hearty breakfast, and then a day dedicated to milk until sundown. Days pass by more or less slowly, depending on the weather, tasks and meetings.
One of the most emotional moments for a herder is the opportunity to share their stories and wisdom, offer the fruits of their labours, and see the smiles this brings to people’s faces.

Milk festival
In mid-July, Lavarone in the Cimbra Alps will be celebrating Vezzena cheese and other dairy-based delights, with a weekend calendar of events, walks and tastings. You’ll be able to try your hand at milking, learn the stories of the herders and participate in themed workshops, which are also perfect for children.
Herder for a day
From the end of June to the beginning of September, the Valsugana and Lagorai alpine dairies will open their doors to the public every Tuesday and Thursday at 9.00 am. Walks, meetings, tastings and live demonstrations of the entire production process from pasture to cheese.
The “Ta Mont” Festival
During the first weekend of August Val San Nicolò, a land of pastures, barns and alpine dairies within the Fassa valley will come alive with concerts, dances, shows, games and tastings. The occasion will see the ancient mountain huts opened to let visitors experience the very heart of the Ladin alpine dairy traditions and more besides.
Experience Tesino – Alpine Dairy flavours
From July to September, every Friday at 9.00 am in Castello Tesino in Valsugana, you’ll have the chance to discover the treasures of Tesino and the activities conducted in its alpine dairies, featuring tastings of local produce and dairy products.
Cheese festiVal di Sole
The Cheese FestiVal di Sole is dedicated to the traditions of alpine pasture farming and of course the unmistakable scent of grass, milk, butter and cheese. There are a series of events that include livestock fairs, folkloric Transhumance Festivals and special events focusing on local products.
