Trento Film Festival 2025

The poster for the 73^rd edition of the Trento Film Festival features a Kluane Park glacier, in Canada, captured by one of today’s greatest photographers, Sebastião Salgado. In the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation the poster is a work of art. The scream reminds us that glaciers are indicators of the health of mountains.

This is just one of the themes that will animate the shows and meetings of the Festival on cinema, mountains and cultures, to be held in Trento, from 25 April to 4 May 2025.

Argentina is the destination selected by this year’s Trento Film Festival. Argentina is a nation far away in terms of distance, but close to the people of Trentino both for the long history of migration that has affected them and for their love of the mountains.

Finally, there will also be talk of mountain-style Western films, a dedicated theme that this year accompanies the Festival’s traditional sections.

Indeed, cinema is the protagonist of the Festival, with previews, meetings and debates, in the context of related events of great importance, such as the exhibition on Salgado at the MUSE Museum in Trento and at the MART Museum in Rovereto.

Destinazione… Argentina (Destination… Argentina)

Every year the Trento Film Festival takes us to a different land. If 2024 was the year of Ireland, 2025 takes us to South America, to Argentina, a land of migration and mountaineering, home to some of the most iconic mountain ranges in the world: the Andes, but, above all, the peaks of Patagonia.

The international premiere Soberanos, the story of three young idealists who, in September 1966, hijacked a commercial plane to go and “reconquer” the Malvinas, also known as “Falkland Islands”, stands out among the titles that make up the “Destination… Argentina” film selection.

Among the Italian premeries of great interest is the feature film El aroma del pasto recién by Celina Murga (Argentina, 2024), with Martin Scorsese as executive producer.

“Destination…” also showcases two new features this year: a restoration by Museo del Cine Pablo Ducrós Hicken and a 4K re-release, in addition to a series of tributes that aim to recover the contemporary masters of Argentine cinema.

Not just cinema

Argentina on the big screens, but also in streets and squares, with a rich calendar of supporting events.

It all begins on 25 April with a concert held at Parco Santa Chiara. A producer, a trumpet, a percussionist and five singers will lead us to the discovery of cumbia, a genre that, hailing from Colombia, has travelled throughout Latin America, eventually finding its own expression beyond the Ocean.

And if we talk about music and Argentina we also talk about tango, which will liven up Piazza Mostra with an Argentine tango and milonga performance.

Worthy of note among the events is the presentation of the podcast “Figlie”: memoria dei desaparecidos (“Daughters”: memory of the desaparecidos) a six-episode project born of a meeting between Sofia Borri and Sara Poma; the podcast tells the story of Sofia and her mother who in 1978, when she was only two years old, was kidnapped and became one of the thirty thousand desaparecidos. A tragic page in Argentina’s history.

The exhibition “Sebastião Salgado. Ghiacciai.” (Sebastião Salgado. Glaciers.) in Trento and Rovereto

Among the Festival-related events, the exhibition at the MUSE Museum in Trento and at the MART Museum in Rovereto is the highlight of this 73rd edition.

From 12 April 2025 to 11 January 2026, the MUSE Museum has designed a large site-specific installation in the spaces of the “Grande Vuoto”, the heart of the museum designed by star architect Renzo Piano. This is a unique collection of photographs captured by the Brazilian artist in Canada, in Kluane Park.

Furthermore, from 12 April to 21 September 2025 the MART Museum in Rovereto will showcase 50 photographs by Salgado of glaciers from all over the world, in large and very large sizes.
