St. Vigil Church and the Franciscan Fathers convent
The biggest Franciscan church of the region Trentino
Located in Cavalese, in the heart of Val di Fiemme, the Church of Saint Vigil and the Franciscan Convent host important paintings of the Fiemme school. The church features a steep two-pitched roof covered with wooden tiles and an ample tympanum on its main façade with a cross of Lorraine. Inside can be found three wooden altars with a sober Franciscan style from the 17th century, as well as several paintings and canvases depicting Franciscan Saints. A chiaroscuro painting can be admired in the choir behind the main altar. The orchestra at the back of the church dates back to 1878 and includes an organ by brothers Rieger. The cloister contains a number of large wall paintings and 35 17th-century etched coppers, narrating the stories of the Franciscan martyrs. The convent hosts an excellent picture gallery of Val di Fiemme painters.
