Trentino Open: a commitment from tour guides

A Trentino experience for everyone

Those who live in Trentino love to tell its stories. The pleasure of sharing its history, culture and soul is so much more tangible when it is done by a local tour guide.

Indeed, it is enthusiasm as well as preparation that makes the experience of a guided tour really stand out. This is how the sharing of knowledge transforms every time into an authentic encounter full of humanity and generosity.

Every tourist guide brings their own mix of both knowledge and life experience. This makes every experience unique, a once-in-a-lifetime combination of views, stories and words that are both the same and different every time.

Accessible guided tours

The Trentino Association of Tour Guides has created and tested three accessible guided tour experiences for people with motor and sensory disabilities. All three tours have spaces suitable for those using a wheelchair and offer the possibility to explore environments and architectural features using touch.

Trento, the cathedral and the historical centre

The tour starts from the Cathedral of San Vigilio, Trento's Duomo. Here, if you are blind or visually impaired, you can touch the marble and statues, accompanied by a guide. You can also better understand the architecture of the Duomo thanks to a tactile scale model that perfectly recreates all the spaces.

From here, the guide will accompany you to Piazza Duomo just outside, with its magnificent Fountain of Neptune and elegant frescoed houses. Finally, walking along Via Belenzani, you will visit the historical centre.

The route is short, but full of points of interest to help you get to know the history and artistic treasures in the heart of Trentino's capital.

Three people, including one in an electric wheelchair, walk down Via Belenzani in Trento. In front of them, in the background, the Church of St. Francis Xavier. It is a clear spring day and the facades of the buildings reflect the sunlight.

Riva del Garda, the Church of the Inviolata and the historical centre

The second tour starts from the Church of the Inviolata, a little Baroque gem: full of statues, frescoes and stuccowork, which isn't just a manifestation of an artistic style, but a whole era. Its spaces are able to accommodate those using a wheelchair, and if you book a tour in advance, you can touch the altars and balustrades to feel their materials and discover all their details.

The guide will then take you to discover the historical centre of Riva del Garda, a town with a unique identity. Here you can experience a mix of fragrances that in Trentino you can only find in these streets: the warm aroma of citrus, the earthy, slightly fruity notes of olive trees and, of course, the fresh, clean smell of the lake.

Rovereto, the Church of San Marco and the historical centre

The tour starts from the Church of San Marco, a spiritual place full of history. You can explore its spaces, and with the help of your guide, touch many of the artistic and architectural features.

Once the visit is finished, the guide will take you along Corso Bettini, up to Piazza Rosmini, with its fountain of the same name and the Renaissance Palazzo Del Bene.

For blind and visually impaired people, this third tour offers an extra experience: a visit to Palazzo Alberti Poja, where in the room dedicated to sculptor Carlo Fait, you can listen to the history of the artworks that fill the space with a timeless atmosphere. With the support of your accompanying guide, you can touch the statues and make it into a sensory experience, combining their stories with their shapes and textures.

To book these guided tours you can contact the Trentino Association of Tour Guides at the number 0461 1596251 (from Monday to Friday, 08.30-12.30) or at the email address ass.guidetn@gmail.com.

The protagonists of the image are the colors: the orange of the church, the yellow ochre of the building in the foreground, on which “Via della Terra” is written, and the white and soft pink of the buildings in the background. Although not inhabited by people, it is a lively, joyful image.

Commitment from tour guides for an accessible experience

As well as these three offers, which are tested and guaranteed to be accessible, there are many other experiences that the tour guides in our region work to organise in order to open up cities, villages, museums and castles to as many people as possible.

In fact, they are now designing personalised visits and preparing tours suitable for people with a range of disabilities more and more often.

If you are thinking about taking part in a guided tour and want to make sure it is suitable for your needs, contact the Association: you will find all the information you need, and, if possible, the tours offered will be adapted to your requirements.
