They were once the theatre of battles and military operations and now their powerful, natural environment holds traces of trenches, fortifications, mule tracks, and barracks that once housed thousands of soldiers during the Great War.
You can discover all this on a range of walks and hikes, some quite easy, others very challenging, sometimes requiring mountaineering experience, but in all cases there are advantages to seeking the help of an experienced guide.
