Valbòna - little Colbricòn

Given the large number of extremely beautiful summer hikes in the Rolle Pass area, the Cima del Colbricón Piccolo hike is an itinerary, which, although easily practicable during the summer, is essentially designed for the winter season.

The traditional starting point is near the car park about three kilometres from the Rolle Pass, heading down towards Val Travignolo on the SS 50. From the car park, the route begins by taking the flat forest road that leads to the Malga Colbricón (1,838 m asl) in just under half an hour, initially following and then crossing the Rio di Valbòna.

After the first stretch through the forest, having reached the “campigol” of the Malga, the panorama opens up to the Pala Group, offering incredible views. From the Malga, you turn right in a south-easterly direction and begin to climb for about 200 metres, through sparse, very steep woodland (in the event of unseasonably heavy snowfall, climb up the right-hand side of the slope, where the vegetation is thicker). Having overcome this part, the route continues to climb along a logical path towards the south, with alternating stretches of vegetation and small clearings, until eventually leaving the vegetation entirely behind at an altitude of about 2,200 metres.

The last 300 metres of elevation are tackled in an open environment with plenty of visibility, following the ridge on the western side that joins Cima Stradón (2,328 m asl) to the north with that of Colbricón Piccolo to the south. During this part of the hike, the edge of the crest and any snow cornices should be avoided.

Once you reach Cima del Colbricón Piccolo (2,511 m asl), the view is vast and breathtaking; the main mountain groups can all be admired: the striking Colbricón to the east (2,602 m asl), yet another popular destination for ski mountaineering enthusiasts, with the Pala Group in the background (Cimon della Pala, Vezzana and Mulaz can easily be recognised), the Lagorai Chain to the south (with the Ceremana, Bragarolo and Cece peaks), and Rosengarten, Marmolada, Tofane and Civetta to the north.

The northern exposure of the wide valley usually ensures good snow conditions for the return trip, which is made by following the outbound route in reverse, with suitable variants depending on whether you have skis or snowshoes.
