Sentiero della Pace 27: Rifugio Malga Masi to Campestrini

A long stage, though almost entirely downhill, which goes by quickly and with some beautiful views even if it has no stand-out moments. Be prepared to arrive tired at your destination!

Leaving Malga Masi, take the trail which rises sharply from the side of the building and cuts through the twists and turns of the forest road as far as the La Bassa gap, with its wide-open meadows and view of the Adamello and Brenta peaks. From here, follow trail 372 as it runs evenly through the larch trees, alternating wide and single track stretches. It will lead you around the Hoabort-Fravort and Cola mountains, gradually losing altitude as you go. A few hundred metres after crossing the Larganza river in Busa dell'Orso, it’s worth taking a quick detour to admire the little Lake Prese.

Now you’ll meet an asphalt road, and follow it as far as Rifugio Serot, shortly afterwards taking trail 323, which cuts out the bends in the road as it gradually gains altitude. After a final scramble, you’ll find yourself by Lake Carezze, a marshy pond set in some truly picturesque surroundings (the ideal place to stop for refreshments). After this, the rest of the way is downhill.

You’ll cross the plain via a mule track, quickly arriving at a well-kept malga, from where you’ll take the trail to the left towards Malga Casa Pinello. From here, continue along the dirt road, making sure to take the correct direction at each fork in the road. Eventually, you will reach the river that splits the valley in two: ford it and, on the other side, carry on for a short while along the trail, until you rejoin a forest road and follow that. You’ll start to feel the effects of such a long walk, but the way ahead is quick and entirely downhill. Asphalt gives way to a dirt road again, crossing Rio Val Mendana, then back to asphalt for the final time. This is the final 4 km stretch: enjoy the picturesque farmhouses scattered here and there and, above it all, the view of the rocky ramparts of the Ortigara group, a truly spectacular sight. You’ll soon find yourself in the little village of Campestrini.
