San Pellegrino Pass - Fuciade - Val Fredda - Malga Boer - San Pellegrino Pass
This hike is an alternative to the classic high-altitude walk, discovering Fuciade basin from another point of view and descending into Val Fredda (Falcade), less known but equally fascinating and interesting from a geological perspective.
From Moena, reach San Pellegrino Pass. Descend for about 200 metres down the other side and, at a slope overpass, take the paved road to the left leading to the parking near Hotel Miralago. From here, an easy, mostly flat walk allows you to reach Fuciade basin, a spectacular calcareous amphitheatre dominated by majestic peaks ("Sas de l’Om", "Jigolé", "Sas de Valfreida"), particularly interesting from a botanical point of view for the presence of plants and flowers exclusive to this area. Go past the cabins of Fuciade, cross the stream, climb up a brief ramp, and follow the wide rut that flanks "Pra Gran". Now follow path no. 670 to Forca Rossa, off to the right. Ascend the ridge of "Le Saline" mountain, separating Fuciade from Val Fredda. The view from here is breath-taking. A continuous up and down, cutting across the head of the valley, takes you to a depression, framed by the imposing mass of "Sas de Val Freida". At the junction, leave path no. 670 and follow no. 694. Cross the stream. Pass by a beautiful crucifix with a unique view on Cime di Focobon, Monte Mulaz, and Pale di San Martino. Now the path becomes wide and unpaved again and runs along the opposite side of the valley. Follow the course of the stream from above, quickly losing altitude (in some sections the gradient is very marked). Ignore the junctions to Malga Bosch Brusà and Malga ai Lach huts and reach the first cabins on the sides of the stream. Ford the waterway. The dirt road crosses the whole valley, dotted by the "Casoni", typical wooden cabins once used by shepherds. It’s a small gem set amidst cathedrals of limestone and volcanic rocks. Nearby the last cabin, a path branches off to the right and reaches, in a few minutes, the underlying hut Flora Alpina. Continue on the forest road and enter a beautiful larch forest. The walk ends on a paved road, open to traffic. Turn right and follow it until reaching Malga Boer hut. Take the path to the right, reconnecting with Fuciade’s road.
