33 - Elbele tour

Èlbele is the forest-covered hillock near Carbonare. In Cimbrian it means 'small alpe', meaning an area of pasture or high ground. The north side overlooks the upper Centa valley, while the south side overlooks the large meadow and pasture area known as Langenbisen ('long meadows', in Cimbrian). It is covered with coppice woodland, predominantly beech and hornbeam, mixed with resinous woods such as spruce and larch. The backdrop is the high wall of the Vigolana and Bècco di Filadonna.

It is not the Èlbele plateau, with its malga, woods and meadows that is the most interesting element of the route. Most noteworthy is the Comando di Virti, the destination of the walk, i.e. the remains of the command station that was set up in a deep natural gorge during the Great War (1914-1918). The place, shrouded in silence, is of great beauty. The rock shelters can also be visited.
