Villa Welsperg Lake
In the heart of the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Nature Park
The small Villa Welsperg lake is situated in Val Canali, near the old villa of the same name that today hosts the head office of the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Nature Park, a library, laboratories and exhibition rooms.
The splendid scenery of the forests and the Pale di San Martino peaks is reflected in the water of this small pool. It is not a natural lake: the Welsperg lords wanted it to enhance the area around the villa built in the nineteenth century as a hunting lodge. There is a story that fantastical creatures called guane used to live in the vicinity of the pool and the ancient Castel Pietra. These creatures, with long fair hair and flimsy transparent dresses, enticed wayfarers with their provocative charm.
You can reach the Welsperg lake from Primiero on the Park shuttle bus or by car; it is also the starting point for outings on foot or by mountain bike in the magical Val Canali.
