L Malghier - The cheesemaking
The branch of the Ladin Museum, located in the headquarters of the cooperative dairy in Pera, is dedicated to rearing and cheesemaking.
Milk, butter and cheese processing, common handling of the pastures, the tradition of seasonal transhumance and high-altitude alpine pastures are narrated through vintage pictures, videos projected on large-screen televisions, descriptive panels, and many original objects from the past, including butter churns to ancient mouldings. Shepherding was an activity that for centuries characterised Fassa’s economic system, as witnessed by the historical emblem "Pèster", documented since 1607.
Beside the museum, you can find the cheese factory “Mèlga de Fascia”, which every day processes the milk coming from about thirty barns, between Soraga and Canazei. Modern processing can be seen thanks to huge windows overlooking the production site.
