Base Tuono
Once a NATO missile base, this is now a museum like no other in Europe, dedicated to the Cold War and the nuclear threat.
Missiles pointing skyward, a hangar, underground bunkers & radar equipment, at Tuono Base, the tension between East & West and the nuclear threat come to life. Between 1966 and 1977, Tuono Base was a missile base for the Italian Air Force and NATO, the highest one in Europe (1,897 metres a.s.l.). After being closed down for a long time, it has been reopened as a museum venue, hosting an important exhibition dedicated to the Cold War. Your visit will include discovering the Nike-Hercules defence system, the engagement sequence, electronic wagons and a missile launch simulation. The managers of this museum complex, which is unique in Europe, offer a guided tour service subject to reservation.
