This Visitor Centre on the road from Predazzo to Passo Rolle is the ideal gateway to the forest of “resonant” fir trees, whose tonewood was used by the finest luthiers to make their best violins.
The Terra Foresta Centre in Paneveggio, the first of three built in the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park, occupies a refurbished former Venetian mill built in 1919. It recounts the stories and legends of the great red-fir forest, also known as the Forest of Violins. The tonewood from these fir trees was used by famous luthiers like the legendary Stradivari to make sound boxes for musical instruments. Panels, cabinets, dioramas and projections also share interesting information on forest animals, the most iconic being the grouse and the deer. Nearby, you can even admire real deer in a vast fenced-in area. This is also the starting point for a nature trail with signposted and illustrated observation points.
