Beethoven: The only way to love him was from afar
This year, we will gather to anticipate the rising of the sun in the company of Ludwig van Beethoven. Our homage to the illustrious German composer will find expression in the notes of a rare contemporary version of a universal hymn to Nature: Symphony No. 6, the “Pastoral Symphony”. This arrangement for string sextet was the work of Ferdinand Ries, a pupil and friend of the great composer, allowing the beautiful music to be brought into homes or other places inaccessible to a symphony orchestra, as was the custom of the time. This new sound detracts nothing from the original genius of the work, which is accompanied on this occasion by narration from a text by music writer and historian Sandro Cappelletto, depicting the lesser-known, private and human side of Beethoven, as seen through the eyes of his nephew Karl.
Cappelletto’s writings will be narrated by Fabrizio Gifuni, one of Italy’s most prominent stage and film actors. The winner of Italy’s “Premio Ubu” award for best actor in 2010 for the play L’Ingegner Gadda va alla guerra, he has worked in cinema and television with directors including Gianni Amelio, Marco Tullio Giordana, Liliana Cavani, Ridley Scott, Marco Turco, Paolo Virzì, Marco Bellocchio and Pupi Avati. A European shooting star at the Berlin International Film Festival and winner of the Italian Foreign Press Golden Globe in 2002, he has also won the Silver Ribbon three times (in 2003, 2014 and 2018) and the Gian Maria Volonté Prize in 2012. In 2014 he received the David di Donatello award for the film Il capitale umano (Human Capital).
The “Pastoral Symphony” itself will be performed by the Quartetto Lyskamm — an Italian group which has garnered fame and recognition both nationally and internationally since 2008 — joined on this occasion by Sara Marzadori on the viola, a student of Antonello Farulli and winner of many competitions who regularly performs with the Camerata Salzburg; as well as Paolo Bonomini, first-prize winner of the XX International J.S. Bach Competition in Leipzig and first cello of the Camerata Salzburg.
To protect the health of artists and audience alike, as required by law, admissions for the Dawn in the Dolomites concert will be restricted to 1,000 ticketholders.
