The history of water and its interaction with man, in Trentino, is one of adaptation, domestication, mutual luck and coexistence. Water that flows impetuously and vertically, which springs spontaneously from the rock, expands and recovers strength in gravity. Water that has carved paths in the earth, drop by drop, at a slow pace, with the constant rhythm of those who know how to wait for the destination, without any haste.
In Val di Non, the history of water and its interaction with man is the history of a landscape and of transformed identities. Of a work, that of the Santa Giustina dam, unique in Europe at the time, which conveyed the waters of the Noce stream to give light to Northern Italy, when there was little light and a lot of it was needed for the rebirth of the country.
It is a water that has replaced pastures and farms forever, shaping the entire valley. But the history of the Val di Non water is also a unique story of irrigation canals, called Lezi or Lez, ditches that can be as old as 200 years, built by hand by man on rocky walls that were used to convey mountain water to fields.
Nine Lezi have been recovered and made safe. Each of them has something to tell. We have chosen two to walk on at slow pace, during a comfortable weekend, alone or with company, because they are suitable for everyone, no matter one’s physical fitness or age.
Day 1: Lez of Rumo - 10 km
The first stage of our itinerary takes you to upper Val di Non, above the village of Rumo. Leave your car in the hamlet of Lanza and from the main square, take an asphalted road that leads to Maso Stasal, beyond which a wooden crucifix points to the crossroads to follow to get to the Giro del Lez trail.
The first part of the route proceeds along a short asphalted road uphill and then through a flat forest, with bright colours that change as the seasons do. Finally, a gentle ups and downs through meadows and glimpses of the green peaks of the Maddalene. Near Corte Inferiore, stop to admire the frescoes of the Church of San Udalrico, which is almost a thousand years old. To return to your base, simply retrace your way back.
Along the way you can stop for a break on meadows, picnic areas or in the cool of woods, along this regenerating trail with a full view of the valley.
At lunch, you can take a refreshing break in one of the farmhouses in the area, to taste typical local dishes.
In the afternoon, you can indulge in other experiences, always in the vicinity of Rumo. We recommend two of them: the Trail of the Mines, from Marcena, which allows you to retrace, in the company of an expert, a geological park and silver-lead ore mines. Or the thematic path “Work, fairies and witches”, around the town of Preghena, among woods, apple orchards and immaculate meadows.
Day 2: Lez Viale dei sogni in Coredo – 6 km
The name says it all for this excursion we recommend for the second stage of our itinerary. As its name foretells, the Lez Viale dei Sogni trail is the stuff of dreams, with its colours of nature and flowers, which, as if by magic, sparkle truer than truth, from the purple of heather to the burning of foliage.
The trail starts at the village of Coredo, in the municipality of Predaia. All you have to do is take the SAT 537 trail, then follow the entire course of the stream, or Lez. Walk slowly - the trail is flat - and waive to the wooden works of art you will encounter along the way. These are sculptures that the Predaia Art and Nature International Art Symposium creates every year by selected artists.
The culmination of the outward journey is an immense playground adjacent to the two lakes of Coredo and Tavon. Here you can give yourself the break you deserve.
Before returning to your base, in about half an hour on foot, you can reach the Santuario di San Romedio. To take the path, skirt the Lake Tavon on the left bank, until you reach a wooden crucifix at the crossroads of a dirt road. Follow the direction for the Santuario di San Romedio – Cammino Jacopo d’Ananunia.
To return to your base from the Sanctuary, just follow the indication Due Laghi which retraces the road in the woods backwards, though this time it goes uphill.
