The Malga di Romeno has been completely restored by the Romeno District Council (the owners), but it has been left as it was in the 1920s, with its wooden veranda enticing visitors to relax in the beautiful clearing on the slopes of Monte Roen, where the little church of Madonna delle Nevi (Our Lady of the Snows) was also built. It would be a shame, however, not to make the (easy) ascent of Monte Roen whose magnificent views are ample reward for the little effort needed to reach the summit: the Dolomites to the east, the Brenta Group to the west, and at your feet the vast plain of the Adige Valley, two thousand metres below.
Walks
It takes about 1 hour with ease (difficulty E) to walk from the refuge to the summit of Monte Roen, which offers a sweeping 360-degree view. It takes just 30 minutes to walk to the Rifugio Oltradige overlooking Bolzano and the lower Adige Valley (difficulty E). From there you can climb to the top of Monte Roen, this time on the easy Roen via ferrata (1 hour, difficulty EEA).
