The Rifugio La Roda, right at the summit of the Paganella, affords breathtaking views of the Brenta Group with Lake Garda in the background, while a little further on the rock drops steeply away to the Adige Valley. There’s also much to admire inside this eco-refuge, rebuilt in 2006 entirely in wood and where the dining room offers not just typical Trentino cuisine but also fish dishes (at over 2000 metres above sea level!). The refuge is at the highest point in the Paganella Ski area in the Trentino mountains (“Paganella, the most beautiful ...” as the famous song goes) and attracts skiers in the winter and walkers (and mountain bikers) in the summer. Open Winter: open from late November to Easter Summer: open daily from 11 June to 18 September; from 24 September to 9 October open only on Saturdays and Sundays. Before leaving for your hike, always contact the manager to verify the actual opening of the mountain hut Walks A short distance from the refuge there’s a lookout point with views over the Adige Valley and where until 1979 the “Direttissima Paganella” cable car came up from Lavis. An easy footpath takes you from Rifugio La Roda down to Malga Zambana (1 hour, difficulty E), while Monte Gazza can be ascended in 3 hours (difficulty E) over Passo Sant'Antonio. The entire northern flank of the Paganella is covered by a network of mountain bike trails, but if you’re looking for bigger thrills there’s the brand new Ferrata delle Aquile - the via ferrata of the eagles - a route that’s in part exposed with Tibetan bridges overlooking the Adige valley from Cima Paganella with dizzying views (2 ¼ hours just for the protected section; the route requires a via ferrata kit and experience, although an alternative path avoids the most difficult part).
