Befana’s coming!
The Befana comes at night in worn out shoes... let's wait together for the nice old lady who will bring all the children tasty treats in the square of Moena
Characteristic of Italy, less known in other countries, the Befana is a sweet old lady who flies on a threadbare broom to visit children in the night between January 5 and 6 - the so called "Epiphany", twelth night after Christmas - and fill the stockings left hanging on the chimney or near the window. According to popular tradition, children who have been good during the year receive delicacies, candies, dried fruit or small toys while those who have been naughty will only find some coal. On 5 January the Befana "lands" also in Moena, bringing special presents for all the children in the square "Piaz de Sotegrava" at 5 p.m. and making them extremely happy. The arrival of the kindly old witch is accompanied by music played by some female musicians from the municipal band. To warm up the spirits, the Alpine Group of Moena will provide a warm and fragrant mulled wine, classic or apple.
