In the midst of spinning wheels and Christmas markets, in search of stories

Rovereto and the Vallagarina villages

A silken thread binds the villages of Vallagarina together and makes Christmas special. It's a story which began centuries ago, in the 16th century, when Rovereto was the most distant outpost in the Venetian Republic's mainland empire. It was a 'silk road' which travelled along the Leno torrent and its irrigation ditches, where mills and spinning machines that changed the face of the town and many other Vallagarina towns forever were built. From Rovereto to Ala, via Villa Lagarina.

A trip best done in winter, when the villages of the valley are lit up with I Natali della Vallagarina. Nativity scenes, markets, tastings and shows. A Christmas event programme bound together by a silken thread.

Piazza della Seta - Silk square

The Rovereto spinning mill was built in the 1630s in Piazza del Podestà. It was a mechanical spinning machine as the town got its first hydraulic spinning machine only in 1580, in the Santa Maria district, along the banks of the Leno stream. It was the beginning of a long story.

To learn about the silkworm farming and processing of this precious material which made the Vallagarina rich from the 16th to the 19th century, just follow events in Piazza della Seta, a mosaic of experiences organised into four thematic paths: exploring, creating, rediscovering and weaving. Workshops, urban trekking along the silk route and educational initiatives around the history of silk and its local links, and a photo exhibition, Fili di seta, at the Rovereto City Museum.
