Trentino, more than just nature
Even the pile dwellings are UNESCO World Heritage sites!
Since 2011, UNESCO has also recognised two sites in Trentino as Cultural Heritage Sites.
The "prehistoric pile-dwellings of the Alps" were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List at its June 2011 session and extend over the territories of six countries - Austria, Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy and Slovenia – with 111 villages considered the most interesting among the approximately 1,000 known sites.
The serial site consists of the remains of prehistoric settlements dating between 5000 and 500 B.C. These sites are located on the shores of lakes or rivers, or in peat bogs that have allowed an excellent preservation of the organic materials.
Two of these archaeological sites are located in Trentino. A short distance from Lake Garda lies the pile-dwelling site of Ledro, with its beautiful village along the shore of the Lake; in the area of Terme di Comano, instead, we find the pile-dwelling site of Fiavé, located in the middle of an important nature reserve. In Ledro, visitors are greeted by a village and a Centre managed by the MUSE of Trento, while a modern museum was opened in Fiavé.
