Pale di San Martino
The Dolomites extolled by the writer Dino Buzzati
Extraordinary peaks like the Cimon della Pala, which at sunset is set ablaze, together with the nearby Cima Vezzana, vertical walls like Sass Maor, desert-like plateaus that lie near the small Fradusta glacier: these are the Pale di San Martino, in the nature park having the same name.
To enjoy the fabulous views of the Pale di San Martino, you can enter the romantic Val Venegia, or walk along the Val Canali, close to Fiera di Primiero. At the entrance of the valley, it is worth making a stop at the Visitor Centre of Villa Welsperg. While, near the centre of San Martino di Castrozza you can take the Cabinovia Colverde (cable car) that takes you to the foot of the Pale di San Martino and the hut having the same name; or you can choose the Funivia Rosetta (cableway) that takes you to the heart of the Altopiano delle Pale (plateau), the starting point of many hikes. From there, you can reach Rifugio Pedrotti alla Rosetta.
You can explore the lunar landscapes of the Altopiano delle Pale also by taking one of the excursions proposed by Palaronda Trek.

Dino Buzzati’s Dolomites
“Are they stones or clouds? Are they real or is it a dream? The Pale di San Martino, in the eastern Dolomites, were also the inspiration for the famous writer Dino Buzzati who, like the English and German travellers of the nineteenth century, described these mountains with fascinating sobriquets, comparing them to clouds, dreams and visions.
