Feeling peckish? You’ve come to the right place
This is Italy, remember. Our lakeside bars and restaurants are full of delicious things to eat and drink
You’ll probably end the day both hungry and thirsty. Which is good thing, because we take our food and wine seriously in Trentino. Whether you’re ordering an ice cream from your favourite gelateria, sipping an aperitivo, or settling down to a pizza by the light of the setting sun, you’ll be impressed by the quality of our produce.
One of the first things you’ll notice is the olive oil. Much of it is produced around Lake Garda, which is the most northerly place in the world to make it, thanks to its famously balmy microclimate. Rich glacial soils and a high chlorophyll content help create its rich green colour and light, fruity taste.
Then there’s the wine. Trentino has several of its own native grape varieties – which are perfectly adapted to the climate. Most famous of the whites is Nosiola, which makes a delicate and aromatic white, while our best native reds are the young and fruity Marzemino (name-checked by Mozart in Don Giovanni) and the robust and tangy Teroldego. We also make fabulous sparkling wine – Trentodoc spumante, which is every bit as good as French champagne.
Add delicious ingredients such as brown trout or a char from our fast upland rivers, venison from the forests, and cheese from our mountain dairies, and you’ll get a sense of how varied and interesting our diet can be. So don’t be shy. Grab a knife and fork, and a wine glass, and get stuck in.
