In Trentino, we celebrate Carnival with energy and passion – and everyone is invited. 

For mountain communities all over Trentino, Carnival is a chance to shrug off the snow and have some fun – before the rigours and solemnity of Lent begin. Some of the festivals have a modern flavour. Others follow centuries-old traditions. But at each one you’ll find a warm welcome, and lots of wonderful things to eat and drink.

Val di Fassa

One of our most traditional festivals is the Ladin Carnival in the Val di Fassa – an explosion of colour, music and comedy set against the mighty cliffs of the Dolomites. Here, you’ll find the locals wreathed in ribbons and wearing outlandish wooden masks, performing their famous mascherèdes – short satirical burlesques, acted out in the ancient language of the Dolomites.

Val di Fiemme

The parade of the masked Bufon, Marascon and Lachè characters is another highlight of the festival – and finds echoes in Valfloriana. Here, the Carnival of the "Matòci" sees the locals parade through the streets, wearing masks known as Facere, and lampooning the old-fashioned bridal processions of the region.

Madonna di Campiglio

In Madonna di Campiglio, Carnival has a very different flavour – and celebrates the resort’s 19th-century links with the Hapsburg monarchy, with a costumed ball, fireworks, and processions.

Garda

Arco Carnival transforms the streets of the historic town centre into a fun park for children, with colourful houses, people on stilts, clowns and jugglers. You can also take part at the traditional parade and enjoy yourself with live music.

Other events

Other Carnival destinations include Grauno, where the locals evoke pre-Christian rituals of atonement and fertility with a huge bonfire overlooking the town, and Storo, which brings together masked dance groups and floats in one of Trentino’s biggest parades. Wherever you go, you’ll find all kinds of traditional Shrovetide treats to enjoy while you watch the celebrations, including crunchy pastry crostoli, krapfen (doughnuts).
