The exhibition "Dürer and others. A Renaissance on the banks of the Adige"

Until 13th October at Castello del Buonconsiglio

SUMMER 2024 - A wonderful view of Castello del Buonconsiglio, on loan from the British Museum, and exhibited for the very first time in Italy. This masterpiece begins the story of a journey, the one that Albrecht Dürer took in Trentino at the end of the 15th century, immortalised in a few famous watercolours. A voyage through a border land, which between 1470 and 1530-1540 became the cradle of a unique renaissance, created out of the interweaving of different cultures.

This is the focus of the exhibition "Dürer and others. A renaissance on the banks of the Adige", at Castello del Buonconsiglio from 6th July to 13th October 2024, an event that marks the culmination of the year 2024, the year of the museum's Centenary.

Curated by Bernard Aikema, Laura Dal Prà, Giovanni Maria Fara and Claudio Salsi, the exhibition brings together important works from the German master for the first time in Trento, coming from different prestigious museums. As well as the previously mentioned View of Castello del Buonconsiglio from the north-west, the exhibition also boasts famous works such as the Adoration of the Magi, from the Uffizi Gallery, and Christ among the Doctors, on loan from the Thyssen Museum in Madrid.

At Castello del Buonconsiglio, Dürer's works enter into dialogue with paintings, sculptures, drawings and etchings by artists such as Alvise Vivarini, Bartolomeo Dill Riemenschneider, Jorg Artzt, Max Reichlich, Michael Pacher and Girolamo Romanino, witnesses of the "Renaissances" that took place along the banks of the River Adige, a precursor to a highway that transported goods, people, and above all, ideas.

Dürer and Trentino

The German artist travelled through Trento and Trentino in the years 1494-95, and was charmed by the landscapes and atmosphere of these places, capturing their essence in a famous series of watercolour paintings.

Dürer was attracted by a Principality where art and the arts were cultivated with great passion, and the Renaissance was interpreted in a completely original way by Trentino artists and foreign artists who came here because they were attracted by the prestige and commissions of the court of the prince-bishops and economic elites.

In the exhibition, Dürer's presence in Trentino is remembered through etchings, drawings, and especially paintings and watercolours. Among these, as well as the previously mentioned View of Castello del Buonconsiglio, some notable pieces are the panoramas of the city of Trento, and the views of Castello di Arco and Val di Cembra with Castello di Segonzano.

His paintings deserve a separate mention, with notable examples such as the magnificent Adoration of the Magi, from the Uffizi Gallery, and Christ among the Doctors, which was painted by Dürer in only five days, as reported by an inscription on the painting.

The exhibition on Dürer and the Trentino Renaissance, in Trento

The Trentino Renaissance

Starting from the spectacular "Dürer case", the exhibition explores the origins of the unique Renaissance that took place in Trentino, a region joining together the German and Italian worlds, between 1470 and 1530/40.

What took shape was a new style, or rather a set of many new languages, influenced by artists, artworks, fashions and methods that travelled from Italy to Germany and Flanders, and vice versa.

There is a particular focus on the great prince-bishop Bernardo Cles (1485-1539), promoter of the construction and decoration of the Magno Palazzo at Castello del Buonconsiglio, advisor to Maximilian I, and then member of the Imperial Diet of Charles V, as well as his Grand Chancellor.

Further exploration is also dedicated to the role of Emperor Maximilian I, the sovereign Dürer served. Maximilian was proclaimed as King of the Romans on 4th February 1508 in Trento, with a lavish ceremony.
