On Wednesday, October 2, 2024, the autumn part of the Sonata Islands festival "Ai Confini e Oltre" kicks off, an exhibition that weaves paths that move between different musical genres, between writing and improvisation, between jazz, rock, classical music, electronics with results of strong innovative and creative charge. Many novelties of 2024, starting with places. The exhibition has in fact expanded into the provincial territory, starting in Rovereto in April and continuing now in Trento and Valle dei Laghi, ending on 20 November 2024.
In 2024, special attention was given to the under-35 generation with two concerts in April in Rovereto (Manida and Marco Centasso quartet) and now with the first two autumn concerts. In fact, it opens on October 2 at the Aula Magna of the Rosmini High School in Trento, Thomas Umbaca, a rising star of Italian pianism, produced by Ponderosa Music with the support of the MiC of the SIAE, as part of the "Per Chi Crea" program, in a solo concert that goes from the piano to a loop station, to voice and percussion.
On October 9, the Lorenzo Simoni Quartet took place in the same place, with the support of IJazz for "Nuova Generazione Jazz". Not yet thirty, Lorenzo Simoni is a saxophonist with unbridled but extremely expressive virtuosity. On the 10th he will join the vibraphonist Alessandro Bianchini in a concert at the Teatro di Vigo Cavedine. This year, the Community of Valle dei Laghi hosted some of the events of the festival, also offering a residency in Lagolo for the preparation of two new projects.
2024 is the fiftieth since the death of the great Duke Ellington, who is remembered in two events, on 17 October, also at the Rosmini High School, with the Piedmontese quartet of Luigi Martinale and Stefano "Cocco" Cantini and on 9 November at the Marangonerie with "Mood Ellington" by Paolo Bacchetta, Giacomo Papetti and Nelide Bandello.
Dedicated to the reinvention of a jazz great is also the double appointment of 22 October (Teatro di Vezzano) and 23 October (Marangonerie): "Like Sonny" with the TTJazz Collective is in fact dedicated to the music of Sonny Rollins. On stage a sextet equally divided between Trentino and Piedmontese musicians: among them Diego Borotti and Alberto Marsico.
On October 30, at the Marangonerie, the new project by saxophonist Tino Tracanna, Sorgente with an original quartet that includes cello, electric clara and drums.
On November 12 and 13 (in Lasino and at the Caritro of Trento) a new production of Sonata Islands trio, Se!t3, with the Swedish saxophonist Mikail Godée, a program that will then move to Tuscany and Sweden and will be recorded
The Marche quartet of drummer Michele Sperandio closes the festival, at Caritro on November 20, with "The Sea of Music".
